The wedge shape, covered headlights, and small wing mirrors on the E36 were designed for optimal aerodynamics. 3-series cars are known for their classic clean lines, luxury appointments, and bolster BMW's claim to "The ultimate driving machine". The instrument panel integrates the stereo, climate control with air conditioning, on board computer, power window and door lock controls, and a shifter surround trimmed in black leather.
The 1996 318i is powered by BMW’s M44 1.9-liter DOHC inline-4 cylinder engine, new for that year with increased volume and better acceleration, but with the same cast iron block with aluminium headers of its M43 predecessor. Factory rated at 138 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 133 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm, this 16-valve system uses the Bosch Motronic 1.7.1 fuel injection system and VANOS variable valve timing. It has a claimed zero-to-60 mph of 10.1 seconds and top speed of 194 km/hr. This third generation 3-Series car came with “Z-axle” multi-link rear suspension for improved traction and handling.
