This is a 1988 BMW M5 finished in black paint (paint code: 086) and it is one of approximately 1,340 examples produced for the North American market. The E28 M5 features an S38 engine with an “M-power” valve cover which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

This E28 M5 is a Canadian market example and the seller mentions he acquired it approximately 6 years ago in 2016. After purchasing the M5 the seller began restoring it, which included a full rotisserie frame restoration, window-out repaint, engine re-seal and all other mechanical/cosmetic areas were gone over and addressed accordingly. The M5 is now offered for sale privately with a clean Alberta registration. The seller is believed to be the third known owner.

For US bidders, this M5 is directly importable without modification as it is EPA & DOT exempt being greater than 25 years old. For more information on USA import and Canada/USA transport, please visit our Import/Transport page here.

The M5’s exterior features an ABS plastic rear trunk-lid spoiler, an aero-dynamic front bumper with integrated foglights, Dual-halogen headlights, chrome kidney grills, tinted taillights and powered-adjustable mirrors. All 1988 BMW M5’s were finished in Schwartz (black) paint when sold new and this M5 was repainted the original colour during the restoration. The window’s were removed and any weather stripping/window seals that were damaged were replaced. The seller notes that all the body panels are believed to be original and damage free as there was no evidence to say otherwise when the original paint was stripped and the bodywork was completed.

The original 16” basket weave wheels were replaced in favour of a new set of OEM BMW BBS 17” basket weave wheels. These wheels are wrapped in a new set of Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R that measure 225/45/R17 in the front and 255/40/R17 in the rear. A new supersprint true-dual exhaust system has been added with matching headers and features twin polished tips mounted in a centre-exit fashion out the rear.

The interior has been entirely re-upholster in Cognac and black leather. The seller has records of the upholstery work completed totalling in excess of $30k CAD. The front/rear seats and door panels feature a diamond stitched pattern while retaining the factory “M triple-stripe” recessed badges. The centre console, dash, E-brake, etc. have all also been wrapped and leather stitched. The roof liner has been re-upholstered in Alcantara as well. The original steering wheel is included in the sale although an Alpina three-spoke steering wheel and matching shift knob have been added.

Interior amenities include powered and heated front seats, powered windows, functioning air-conditioning and the factory head-unit radio was retained and is functional. The seller added rear heated seats as well, with a duplicate set of the factory control buttons. The factory door jam stickers have been retained during the restoration process. The analog cluster shows just over 255k-kms which is said to be unaltered/original. The seller mentions that over the 6-year restoration process, under 150km have been added to the M5 since completion.

Powering the M5 is a 3.5L inline-six cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual Getrag transmission that sends power to the rear wheels solely through a limited-slip differential. The engines pistons and rods are original but the engine was torn-down for a complete reseal of the block, cylinder head and individual throttle body assembly. New E34 M5 callipers have been added front and back for improved stopping power with slotted rotors and new pads. New Alpina struts and springs have been added to update the M5’s suspension. All other suspension components have been powder coated to ensure rust protection for years to come. Undercarriage pictures along with an idle, rev and driving video are included in the gallery below.
