Description
This is a 1959 Intermeccanica 356 Speedster Replica finished in Arctic Silver over a Burgundy interior. It is powered by a 1.7-liter flat-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Special features on this car include a hidden FM/MP3 stereo head unit with USB dual two way speakers, a Nardi style wood steering wheel (with a matching wood shift knob and door locks), a third brake light, Aero-style chrome door mirrors, and a carpeted front trunk. This stylish Intermeccanica is currently registered in British Columbia with a clean and (Normal) status. The odometer reads approximately 26k-kms. The original 356 Speedster used the Volkswagen Beetle chassis as a starting point, but the exterior was made to be more aerodynamic, and the resulting product was lightweight and agile, by the standards of the day at its 1950 release. The Intermeccania replica like this one here uses a bespoke tube frame chassis that sets itself apart from other replicas on the market.
The seller purchased this Speedster from the previous owner here, in an auction ending on October 21st 2022. Click HERE to view the previous listing. The seller has added approx. 600-kms since his purchase.
It has a racy, cut-down windshield and distinctive torpedo-like fenders with large round headlights encircled with chrome. A thin chrome character line runs the length of the car, which divides Roadster script and an Intermeccanica logo behind the front wheels.
Fender skirts partially conceal the rear wheels, and the car has a black Haartz Stayfast soft top with a zip out rear window. The rear-engine boot lid has vents and Porsche insignia. European teardrop shaped tail lights with amber turn signals sit above a body-coloured rear bumper with chrome and rubber strips. Dual sterling exhaust tips appear at either end of the third brake light. This Speedster replica rides on 15” chrome wheels with Porsche Super 90-style hubcaps. A set of Moon style hubcaps are included in the sale. The wheels are wrapped in Yokohama 185/65R15 Steel Belted Radial Tires and equipped with Intermeccanica custom 5 X 130 mm bolt pattern disc brakes.
The previous owner purchased this Intermeccanica as a project after it has suffered a carburetor fire. He then went through a lengthy process to rebuild the Speedster at which the restoration was completed in 2012. The Speedster received a new vin number, a U-built registration status and it passed all associated provincial BC inspections to do so. Photos of the restoration process are included in the gallery below.
For US bidders, this Speedster Replica is not importable due to its U-built registration status. For Canadian buyers looking for transport assistance and out-of-province information please see our info. page here
Inside, the Roadster-style seats are upholstered in Burgundy vinyl and equipped with headrests, and the headliner is a camel coloured cashmere. A Nardi style cherry wood steering wheel fronts period correct instrumentation with a fuel level and temperature gauge to the left, a 6K rpm tachometer with VDO components at the centre, and a 200 km/hr speedometer to the right. A VDO oil pressure gauge is installed below the dash. The shifter and door lock knobs are cherry wood to match the steering wheel. The glass windows roll up using chrome handles. The floor is covered using grey carpeting with burgundy binding, and the car is equipped with a hidden FM/MP3 stereo head unit with USB dual two way speakers. The seller notes that he will have an oil changed performed before the new owner takes possession.
This rear-engine, rear wheel drive 356 Speedster replica by Intermeccanica is powered by an air-cooled 1.7-liter flat-four engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission with a 4.12:1 final drive ratio. This is rated at 80 horsepower and 80 lb-ft of torque and comes equipped with dual 40mm IDF Weber Carbs on dual port heads with high ratio rocker arms, a “Magnaspark” electronic ignition, a Type 4 high capacity oil cooler, a free flow oil filter, and a lightened flywheel. A full modern GM wiring Harness is used with modern relays and blade fuses by EZ Wiring. The Speedster has four wheel independent suspension with trailing arms and torsion bars, gas shocks, inboard rear ride height adjustment, and the front suspension is also mechanically adjustable.
