Description

This is a 1957 BMW Isetta project with a running motor. It is powered by a 300 cc four-stroke motorcycle engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The BMW Isetta is one of 200 imported to Canada in the late Fifties, according to the seller. This Italian-designed microcar was the top-selling single cylinder car in the world in 1955. This quirky BMW Isetta is currently registered in Ontario with a clean and (Normal) status. The seller acquired this project a few months ago and emphasises that the engine is complete, not seized, and does turn over - however, the Dynastart generator/starter system is not currently installed.

For US bidders, this Isetta is directly importable without modification as it is EPA & DOT exempt being greater than 25 years old. For more information on transport/import please visit our Transport/Import page here.

The purchaser of this fun Isetta project will be provided with replacement panels for its restoration. The entire front panel of the Isetta hinges open for entry. This is framed by US-spec tubular overriders and centred with a BMW badge and Isetta chrome script. The windshield has a black rubber bezel. The headlamps are large round units with chrome bezels and jet age-style turn signal lights are mounted on the fenders.

The tail lights are designed in a similar fashion, rising above a rusted chrome bumper and tubular overriders. The rear windshield is also enclosed in black rubber. 10” steel wheels are mounted on this car, though the tires are in need of replacement, and the Isetta is riding on dollies. This cute little car is just 90 inches long and 54 inches wide, with rear tires that are 19 inches apart.

Most of the car’s interior is rusted through, but a restored Isetta will feature a bench seat for two occupants. The seller notes that he will provide a seat frame, which is pictured in the gallery. Behind the seat the Isetta has a large parcel shelf with a spare wheel below.

Ventilation for this car can be created by opening the windows, or rolling down the fabric sunroof that it is intended for. The Isetta has a three-spoke steering wheel which fronts a single reverse-sweep 60 mph VDO speedometer with a chrome bezel. This has an inset 5-digit odometer. A gearshift lever is located to the left of the driver.

The RWD Isetta is powered by a 300 cc four-stroke motorcycle engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. This has a claimed top speed of 75 km/hr and provides 13 horsepower and 14 lb-ft of torque when new. An enclosed chain drive connects the gearbox to a solid rear axle with a very narrow track, negating the need for a differential. The front axle is a modified version of a Dubonnet independent suspension.
