This is a 1951 Alvis TA21 saloon car finished in its original Black and White over a burgundy interior. This Alvis TA21 saloon is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. The British automaker Alvis produced the TA21 from 1950 to 1953, releasing 1,300 examples in that time, with only 757 saloons in that number. With only 38K-kms on the odometer, this TA21 is currently registered in British Columbia with an active and (Normal) status. The seller acquired the TA21 four years ago from a family in North Vancouver who had imported the car from England in the Sixties. An original operators manual and parts catalogue are included in the sale.

For US bidders, this Alvis is directly importable without modification as it is EPA & DOT exempt being greater than 25 years old. For more information on transport/import please visit our Transport/Import page here.

The exterior styling of early Fifties cars is exemplified here with the TA21’s high beltline, long nose, and suicide doors. The headlights are faired to the fenders, which are a bulging teardrop shape design, a continuation of the Art Deco influence on automotive aerodynamics prevalent throughout the 1930s. The grille is a high rising vertical slatted chrome unit reminiscent of a Bentley MkVI. Naturally, as coachwork was a fairly standardised craft at the time, with English coachbuilder H.J. Mulliner of London designing for both Alvis and Bentley throughout the 1950s. The hood opens sideways to reveal the inline-six. Front doors are rear-hinging (“suicide” style) and the rear doors are cut out to conform with the two-tone rear fenders. The rear luggage compartment was a new development for this model, resulting in a vehicle length of 182 inches. Stopping power is provided by 11 inch drum brakes on a hydraulic Lockheed system. Semaphore Trafficator signals are featured and in working order, a video showing their function is included in the gallery below.

Inside the cabin, seating for four is upholstered in burgundy leather. The door panels are accented with cherry wood and black leather, and the windows roll down. Seat belts have been installed. The dash is wood with round Smith gauges behind a three-spoke right hand drive steering wheel with an Alvis eagle emblem at its centre. The 100 km/hr speedometer at the centre has an inset clock. Amp and water temperature gauges are to the left, with oil and fuel gauges to the right. Various pull switches are below. A radio is mounted on the dash to the drivers right, with an ash tray above at the centre. The shifter is floor mounted with a cherry wood knob and a resin coated Alvis badge. Sliding climate controls are mounted beneath the dash to the driver's left. Rear passengers are provided with a fold-down arm rest and a courtesy light. Carpeting is burgundy to match the seats. The seller mentions that parts are easily available, and recommends parts supplier Red Triangle in Warwickshire, England.

This Alvis TA21 is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. This is rated at 93 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque when new, with a top speed of 143 km/hr. The engine incorporates timing gears at the rear of the cylinder block and a 7-bearing crank.  Suspension is independent with coil springs at the front, and leaf springs are found at the rear. Recent service performed by the seller includes cleaning the oil pan and fuel tank and having the Solex carbs restored in 2018. The front suspension rubber and shocks were replaced in 2019, and the brake hydraulics were rebuilt. In 2020, a new ignition was installed with the help of Carry On British Parts of Abbotsford, and the brake wheel cylinders and fuel pump were rebuilt. In 2022, the radiator was flushed, but the seller suspects it will need to be removed and re-cored.
