Description
This 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro is finished in Savannah Beige Metallic and Pastel White (paint codes #LH1V and L90D) over a navy and grey cloth interior. It is powered by a swapped EJ25 Subaru engine - a 2.5-liter flat-four - and paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Syncro was built on Volkswagen’s Type 2 T3 platform, with the Syncro nameplate referencing the 4WD model, for which production began in 1984. This VW Syncro is a US-spec example registered in British Columbia with an active and (Normal) status, and approx. 34K-km showing on the odometer. Service records since 2012 are available.
For US bidders, this VW Syncro is directly importable without modification as it is EPA & DOT exempt being greater than 25 years old. For more information on transport/import please visit our Transport/Import page here.
This VW Vanagon Syncro features a rear-engine, cabover, high clearance design with a black grille centred by a chrome VW emblem framed by square headlights.
The bumpers are by Rocky Mountain Twin Peaks in black steel, and the van’s character lines are painted yellow. The seller mentions that the entire two-tone body was repainted. The spare tire is mounted at the back on a Rocky Mountain swing-away steel bracket. The rear window wiper is a factory upgrade. Volkswagen, Vanagon, and Syncro script emblems accent the rear door above a black step bumper and bar shaped taillights.
The Syncro rides on 16” Rally Style Go Westy wheels with VW centre caps wrapped in BF Goodrich all terrain tires, L215/65R16 with South-African spec Go Westy brakes, discs at the front and drums at the rear.
Inside the cabin, seating for five is upholstered in grey and navy striped cloth. The door panels and floors remain for restoration work. A birch plywood interior panel kit is included in the sale. The front carpet and ceiling liner have recently been replaced by the seller.
Air conditioning controls are located to the right of the steering wheel column, with an area for stereo installation alongside these. The front seats are manually adjustable buckets, and the rear seats are a bench that folds down to make a rock n roll bed.
The two-spoke steering wheel fronts a 100 mph speedometer and a 6K rpm tachometer, with a digital clock at the centre. The rear cargo area comes with a padded platform.
This 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro is powered by a swapped EJ25 Subaru Legacy engine - a 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder Boxer engine generating 155 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. This is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission driving all four wheels. The four-wheel drive system was designed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, with a short wheelbase and 48/52 front/rear weight distribution.
