The Subaru BRAT had a production run from 1977 to 1994, but interestingly, it was not available for sale in the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). In various other markets, such as the UK, Australia, and others, the BRAT was marketed under different names.

To circumvent higher importation taxes in the USA and Canada, rear-facing bucket seats and carpeting were incorporated into the cargo area of the BRAT models destined for these regions. This modification became a distinctive feature and signature of the model in those markets.
