In January 2024, Formula Auctions played a pivotal role in fulfilling a long-held dream: revisiting California and attending the annual Mooneyes New Years Party at Irwindale Speedway. The show proved to be a resounding success, boasting over 1300 classic cars, each exuding its own distinctive style and flair. Amidst this impressive array of vehicles, certain ones commanded particular attention. Notably, the 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, affectionately dubbed "Local Gurl," emerged as a standout among the rest.

On January 27th, under the radiant California sun at Irwindale Speedway, a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle basks in the warmth, positioned at the corner of one of the many rows of classic cars. Its metallic flake finish glistens, inviting the gaze of onlookers. AJ, known as @islanderaj, has been the proud owner and builder of this air-cooled Vocho named "Local Gurl" for numerous years. Continuously refining and enhancing the splendid air-cooled Volkswagen, AJ has meticulously added striking details and improved performance, resulting in an evolving masterpiece.

Initially, AJ embarked on the journey of building Local Gurl simply as a way to emark on journeys with longtime friend @vintage_vochos and enjoy outings with other fellow air-cooled enthusiasts. His original intention wasn't to create a "show car" but rather something to relish at events and engage attendees in conversations about his vision. However, as AJ attended numerous car shows, the overwhelming reception toward his Volkswagen showcased how his meticulous attention to detail and profound affection for the car radiated through his work. Garnering a plethora of first-place awards and trophies, AJ's proudest moment came when Local Gurl clinched the esteemed Ranflas Y Viclas’ Best of Show at the 2023 LA Auto Show. To truly grasp the Beetle's unique charm, AJ graciously led me through an in-depth exploration of the car's build process, highlighting all the individuals who contributed to bringing his vision to life.

AJ undertook the Volkswagen's construction right within the confines of his home's parking stall, devoid of a garage or dedicated workshop for the majority of the project's duration. Beneath a layer of metal flake-infused clear coat meticulously sprayed by Sabass at OG Neighborhood Classics, the car retains its original patina, adorned with an aqua blue/green roof and a stealthy green touch to the body. AJ's thematic homage to the vibrant hues of a Hawaiian landscape—comprising of browns, greens, and blues—resplendently shines through the shimmering flakes. Additionally, AJ entrusted his Beetle to two exceptionally skilled pinstripers, offering them a canvas for their artistry. David Rivas of @r1va5_pinstriping adorned the majority of the Beetle's body with intricate designs, while @mr_rhythm Pinstriping left his mark across the hood, further enhancing the car's allure.

Every aspect of the Beetle exuded meticulous attention to detail and boundless charm. The front windshield and side rear glass underwent modification, boasting the renowned safari popout window kit, facilitating an exceptional influx of airflow to keep the interior refreshingly cool while cruising under the California sun. Further enhancing its appeal, the Beetle is embellished with supplementary lights, vintage hot rod and cruiser accessories, and even features the beloved Pixar character "Dory'' adorning its exterior. Inside, Hand Built Customs LLC of Long Beach, California, meticulously crafted the upholstery, enriching the interior with a grey tweed finish that adds an additional layer of comfort and sophistication.

The Beetle's uniqueness extends beyond its multitude of physical aesthetics, as AJ imbued it with a heightened level of performance. AJ incorporated a 1968CC Stroker engine built by @classic.gears, which channels power through its Pro Street Transaxle crafted by Right Gear of Riverside, California. To optimise the Beetle's performance, Lizard Motorsports provided a meticulous tune, transforming this modest cruiser into a legendary contender capable of keeping pace with automobiles two decades its junior. Even more impressively, AJ's brother @_agmf__ travelled from his home in Hilo, Hawaii, to wire the entire car with a modern copper core harness and upgrade it to a blade-style fuse system, further enhancing its functionality and reliability.

Local Gurl gracefully hugs the ground, courtesy of an Air Lift suspension system, enabling her to glide along highways with comfort and effortlessly lower herself for the shows, embodying the essence of low and slow. This air ride system seamlessly integrates with the shortened front beam, meticulously cut down by three inches on either side, and the bespoke rear suspension featuring sway-away axles and a custom 4-link meticulously crafted by BMF Racing.

AJ's vision for this Beetle blossomed into reality through the collaborative efforts of friends, family, and numerous remarkable businesses across California. Together, they united to bring his dream to fruition. Local Gurl has not only garnered awards but has also captured the hearts of all who have had the pleasure of witnessing her charm and beauty in person. With style and performance as the guiding principles, AJ and everyone involved have crafted one of the most exceptional Volkswagen Beetles to grace the streets of the world.
