Modular Mercury

In Alberta, numerous weekly evening shows feature an astounding array of automobiles. Each event boasts nearly one hundred distinct vehicles, with some venues showcasing triple that number, offering a diverse range of builds. During a visit to one of Edmonton's largest events in 2023, a striking 1965 Mercury M-100 with a captivating patina immediately drew my gaze. However, it was apparent that this truck held secrets beyond its surface charm.

During the first two decades of production, the Ford F-Series had a counterpart exclusively available in the Canadian market under the Mercury brand. The Mercury M-Series trucks were produced from 1947 to 1968, encompassing five generations and offering a distinctive and popular alternative to their Ford counterparts. Since the advent of social media, Mercury trucks have gained international recognition, with their existence becoming increasingly known among collectors and enthusiasts alike.

In Edmonton, Alberta, I spotted this 1965 Mercury M-100 longbed pickup proudly displaying its original paint and bearing the scars of six decades of hard work. Despite retaining its authentic character, this Canadian gem had been customised with modern upgrades tailored to the owner's personal preferences.

The M-100 was lowered down and close to the ground, a highly favoured trend in the full-size truck enthusiast community in recent years. It now sports a set of American Racing Torq Thrust wheels, a stark contrast to the weathered paint. Inside, the factory bench seat has been swapped out for a 21st-century Ford F-Series King Ranch rear bench seat, a sought-after conversion among classic Ford truck builders seeking to provide more luxurious and comfortable seating for occupants during travel.

Underneath the hood lies a S197 generation Mustang 4.6-liter V8 engine. This updated Ford V8 not only enhances the Mercury's power but also improves its fuel economy to the rugged and tough nature of the vehicle.

During my travels across Alberta, I stumbled upon a weathered 1965 Mercury M-100 at a well-attended weekly show in Edmonton. Its patinaed exterior exuded a sense of history, yet it was enhanced by a variety of modernised features, lending the vintage longbed a distinct resto-modded charm.
