A Blind Dream
In 1940, Buick embarked on a restyling journey for their cherished Super and Special models, bidding adieu to the antique lines and technologies to usher in a more aerodynamic and fresh look to stay competitive with the revamped designs coming from Detroit competitors. The narrative of this 1940 McLaughlin-Buick unfolds as a truly remarkable and special tale to recount.
The front of the 1940 McLaughlin-Buick
Back in November, 1939 this 1940 McLaughlin-Buick Special found its first owners in the form of a 25-year-old Charlie Suffsick and his father, Gus Suffsick. The decision to acquire the car was made after the two had attended the auto show in Regina two months prior. Surprisingly, although they were the proud new owners of this brand-new car, Charlie never had the opportunity to drive it.

Born in 1915, Charlie defied the odds and lived a remarkable 96 years on this planet, all while grappling with the struggles of being legally-blind. His indomitable spirit led him to pursue a fulfilling career as an electrician, and he took on the responsibility of maintaining the 1940 Buick for his father. The car remained in active use until 1972 when Charlie’s father signed the car over for a symbolic $1, after which it found a secure sanctuary in his heated garage, where it remained cherished throughout the rest of his life.
The original Buick emblem is a true sight to behold
The McLaughlin-Buick boasts the renowned Buick Straight 8 engine under the hood, complemented by a three-on-the-tree manual transmission. The Special proudly retains its original paint, wearing its battle scars with honour, and over the years, the car has aged gracefully, much like a fine wine.
The incredible interior was just a work of art
Today, the Buick is entrusted to the capable hands of Mr. Suffsick’s nephew, Wayne, who passionately keeps the legacy of his Uncle Charlie’s Buick alive. Wayne’s enthusiasm knows no bounds as he eagerly shares the Buick’s rich history with anyone who expresses even a passing interest in this historic Buick.

Charlie served as the caretaker of this vehicle throughout his lifetime, tending to its maintenance for decades and ensuring it remained sheltered from the elements. Now, his nephew, Wayne, has taken up the mantle as the proud preservationist of the Buick, sharing its remarkable history with enthusiasts for decades to come.
